With regards to sport and physical fitness, I competed in a wide variety of sports during my school career and competed in in swimming and water-polo at a provincial level. My working life started in the military, training and leading men, both in operational readiness and active deployment. When I left the army, I moved into the fitness industry. During this time, my primary focus was to introduce newcomers to a lifestyle of fitness and familiarize them with the gym environment, placing an emphasis on safe biomechanics and a lifetime of progression. I left the fitness industry to explore other avenues and returned a couple of decades later to work on my own health, which had taken a few knocks, to say the least. It didn’t take long to realize my body had changed and my training needed to be different from when I was in my 20’s! But what had changed and how was I going to get the most from my training? This question led me to explore the physiological changes in my body, and the requirements, benefits and potential dangers of exercise in our forties, fifties, and onwards.
